About Me

Posted in Uncategorized on April 23, 2008 by saganscandle

Hello everybody,

I started this blog with one objective in mind: To discuss matters relating to science and skepticism today in a non-presumptive way. I am chemistry student getting my bachelor’s degree. I live in Atlanta, in the United States. Politically, I ascribe to no particular political party, I find all of them to be inept, atrocious, or needing just a little more cowbell.

About the Name:

Carl Sagan was a well known astronomer and popularizer of science and skepticism. He wrote a book, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, in which he describes the scientific method in beautiful detail. I think it is important for everyone, especially scientists, to take advantage of the benefits of skeptical inquiry.

The subtitle, Skepticism with a small “s”, is in reference to the fact that I never felt skepticism to be a sort of moral philosophy. It is a method, rather than a set of positions, and one should never be so arrogant as to say such-and-such a thing is impossible. I admire the discipline exercised by James Randi, who staunchly denies being a debunker, and always states responsibly that rather than deny various claims
he merely refuses to believe them without evidence.

It may seem vague what exactly distinguishes this from what could be considered a big “s” skeptic by contrast. It’s not the point though, the idea is that skepticism is a humble pursuit juxtaposed against rationalized and incorrect belief.

I hope you enjoy the blog.
